Adapted from Taste of Home, this scones recipe is easy and makes a small batch so there is less waste.

They are crumbly around the edges with a super flaky and buttery interior. They taste just like Panera orange scones, if not better.

How to Make Perfect Scones?

There are 3 secrets to making the perfect scone:

First, use COLD ingredients. Keep the butter, milk and egg in the fridge until you are ready to use them. Cold butter releases steam during baking process, which helps to create a flaky scone.

Second, do not over mix the dough or you will have a hard, dense scone. This dough comes together very quickly.

Third, take the time to chill the scones after they are cut into wedges. This will prevent them from over spreading into a mess during baking.

What Do You Eat Scones With?

The most popular way to enjoy scones is with a cup of hot tea or coffee.

Orange scones can be topped with an orange glaze made with powdered sugar, orange zest and orange juice.

Scones can be dusted with powdered sugar or enjoyed with jam or honey.

You can also serve scones with clotted cream, just like the English.

Scone Baking Tips

  • You can use pastry flour instead of all-purpose flour for a lighter scone.
  • You can add orange extract, orange zest or orange juice to enhance the orange flavor.
  • I always double pan my scones to prevent over browning on the bottom.
  • I rotate my pan half way through the baking process to prevent burning.
